THE BASICS

Filling Out Book Logs
When you register for the program, a book log is filled out for you.  This is where we will keep track of the books you have read.  Once you have read a book, we can record it.  We will ask you your opinion of the book and write the title down in your book log.  We will hold your log for safekeeping.
Please register and fill out a book log at one location only.

Earning Stamps
Each time you read a book and record it with a staff member, squares will be stamped in your “Library Stamp Book.”  The number of stamps you will receive is based on your grade level.  For example, a first-grader would be registered in the Easy Readers Club and receive four stamps per book.

Library Store
Library Stores, which will be stocked with books, school supplies and other exciting prizes will be set up at each location.  Stamps will be used to “purchase” items.  The more you read, the more items you will be able to take home.

Note to Parents:
Students who participate in the Summer Reading Club will walk away with much more than prizes and happy memories.  Reading is a skill, and just like any other skill, the ability to read improves with practice.  You can help by encouraging your child to read.

Helpful Hints
To keep the program running smoothly, we have a few suggestions.

Choosing Books:
Books from home or school will not be accepted for reading credit.  Materials must be checked out from the East Chicago Public Library or read at one of the library’s locations.
We have a wide variety of books to suit your age level and interests.  A library staff member will be happy to help you make your selections.

Recording Books:
Books may be recorded only at specific times.  Please check with the staff at your location for those times.
No recording will take place during programs.
If many participants are waiting to record books, no more than five books may be recorded at a time.  You will be asked to sign in so that we can assist you better.
