Grant Funded Programs
United We Stand
Cultural Program that includes African American, Puerto Rican, Mexican and European Heritage programs, International Day Cinco DeMayo, Hispanic Heritage Month, Day of the Child/Book, and Christmas Around the World are programs that focus on the ethnic groups that have settled in East Chicago. Programs are planned throughout the year and are held at the Main Library.
Christmas Around the World
Trees are decorated honoring the different ethnic groups who reside(d) in East Chicago. Over the years, the exhibit has included a tree lighting ceremony, caroling, storytelling and a visit from Santa.
Prime Time Family Reading
A six-week program of reading, discussion and storytelling which targets at risk families with children ages 6 to 10. The program utilizes a discussion leader and storyteller. Program designed by LEH.
Library Cinema Program
Circulation/Audio Visual staff show monthly film programs at Main and Patrick Branches. Films are shown for adult and family audiences.
We the People Bookshelf / Pursuit of Happiness
September – A partnership between the East Chicago Public Library and the School City of East Chicago utilizing elementary and middle school students. Activities include: class visits, drawings depicting the theme, a play for the after school program, book talks and essays.
Books to Bridge the Region
Region-Wide Reading Event formerly One Book One Region is now under construction with a projected starting date in September. Please visit www.books2bridge.org for more information.
International Reading Day
In cooperation with Northwest Indiana Literacy Coalition and the Indiana Adult Literacy Coalition to “Take Time Out for Reading.” 15 minutes of reading at 10:00 a.m. September 7, 2007. Red noses are distributed (Put your nose in a book) to schools and other interested agencies.
