Learn Create Share @ Your Library® during
Teen Tech Week 2010
EAST CHICAGO (February 23, 2010)
Local teens will be tuning in at the library as the East Chicago Public Library and the School City of East Chicago collaborate in providing Compass Learning Odyssey during Teen Tech Week March 7-13, 2010. They join thousands of other libraries and schools across the country who are celebrating this year’s theme, "Learn Create Share @ Your Library®.”
Teen Tech Week is a national initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) aimed at teens, their parents, educators and other concerned adults. The purpose of the initiative is to ensure that teens are competent and ethical users of technologies, especially those that are offered through libraries. Teen Tech Week encourages teens to use libraries' non-print resources for education and recreation, and to recognize that librarians are qualified, trusted professionals in the field of information technology.
Library Director, Manuel Montalvo, feels that "Getting students into libraries is essential. Offering a variety of technologies and providing top notch education about these resources is key in getting them in the door. Once they’re in the door, anything is possible.” Recent studies from Pew Internet & American Life Project show that, on average, 8-18 year olds spend more than 6 hours per day using technology including TV, DVDs, video games, audio media, and computers. “Teen Tech Week is a way for librarians and educators to collaborate with and educate students about technology,” says Manuel Montalvo, Library Director. “Over the last several years the library’s role in increasing technology literacy has become more and more important, equal to that of reading literacy.”
Teens are encouraged to celebrate Teen Tech Week. The Library hopes to attract a wide variety of teenagers and increase teen technology literacy locally by offering: CompassLearning Odyssey a computer based program that delivers standards aligned PreK-12 curricula that provides interactive, self-paced, challenging, engaging activities. Activities promote exploration, individual and cooperative learning, problem solving, reflection, and real-world connections. CompassLearning Odyssey K-12 curriculum includes Reading/Language Arts, Writing, Math, Algebra, Social Studies, ELL, Intervention and Advanced AP.
For additional information contact Kimberly Julkes at 219.397.2453 Ext. 19. Teen Tech Week is held annually the second week of March. For an updated list of sponsors and supporting organizations, visit www.ala.org/teentechweek.

“Read Beyond Reality @ your library”
(East Chicago Public Library - October 19, 2009)
The East Chicago Public Library encourages area teens to read for the fun of it during Teen Read Week™, October 18-24. The library will be offering several fun programs just for teens at all outreach locations.
During this week, thousands of libraries, schools, and bookstores will celebrate this year’s theme, “Read Beyond Reality @ your library.” Teen Read Week™ is the national adolescent literacy initiative of the Young Adult Library Services Association, a division of the American Library Association.
“Today’s teens seem to have less and less free time, and there are increasingly more activities for them to take part in during what little leisure time they have,” said Manuel Montalvo, Library Director. “That is why it’s important to encourage teens to set aside some time to read.”
Studies show a regular reading habit increases reading proficiency, something Library Director Manuel Montalvo agrees with. “One of the most important ways teens acquire the habit is by watching adults they respect enjoying reading,” Montalvo said. Parents of teens are encouraged to celebrate Teen Read Week™ at home. Library Director Manuel Montalvo offers these ideas:
· Visit your local public or school library with your teen to attend a program or check out books.
· Share your favorite book with your teen.
· Join a book discussion group.
East Chicago Public Library locations are as follows: Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, Pastrick Branch, 1008 W. Chicago Ave, Reading Room locations; Clemente Center-3616 Elm St., Heritage Hall-4506 Todd St., King Center-4802 Melville Ave., Owens Center-4001 Alexander Ave., Penn Center-3550 Penn. Ave., 151st Center-4925 Gladiola Ave. and Mark Town Community Center-3509 Spruce St. Stop by during Teen Read Week to read beyond reality!
