“After School Cooking Tricks & Treat"

EAST CHICAGO – (October 12, 2011) – After school chefs will have the opportunity to learn some cooking tricks at the East Chicago Public Library this month. “After School Cooking Tricks & Treat,” will be offered at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive. Joyce Martin, Interim Department Head of Outreach Services of the East Chicago Public Library, will guide the children as they learn the basics of cooking and baking. Program dates and times are as follows: Thursday, October 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.

Black History 101 Mobile Museum: Necessary Exhibit

EAST CHICAGO (October 13, 2011) – The Black History 101 Mobile Museum will be visiting the East Chicago Public Library. Necessary! an exhibit featuring rare museum quality artifacts that celebrate the accomplishments, contributions, and the struggles of African Americans will be on display for one day only on Saturday, October 29 from 10 am-3:30 pm in the Templeton Gallery located in the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive.

In conjunction with the exhibit, the program will include an opening address by the museum founder, Khalid el-Hakim, poetry, and a lecture by former member of Public Enemy, Professor Griff. Refreshments will be served in the meeting room.

For the past 20 years, the Black History 101 Mobile Museum has acquired thousands of original artifacts of Black memorabilia that date from slavery to Hip Hop culture. The Black History 101 Mobile Museum travel to colleges, universities, schools, conferences and cultural events across the county.
The event is FREE and open to the public. The exhibit/program is being sponsored by the Foundations of East Chicago, Real Truth Ministries, The A-Team, Teens in Action, 100 Women of Northwest Indiana, Benita White-Arnold, Councilwoman elect and the East Chicago Public Library.

Library Board Member

The School City of East Chicago is seeking individuals interested in becoming a Library Board member for the East Chicago Public Library.
Qualification: Must be a legal resident of East Chicago, IN
Duties of the Library Board of Trustees:
  • Govern and set written policy for the library. It has the power to make all rules and regulations for the discharge of its responsibility.
  • Employ a competent and qualified library director to carry out its policies and shall evaluate the director on an annual basis.
  • Plan for the future of the library in light of the needs of the community, securing adequate facilities and funds to carry out the library’s program of service.
  • Monitor and evaluate the overall effectiveness of the library.
  • Act as an advocate for the library in the community and actively support library legislation.
  • Monitor financial affairs of the library by discussing and approving the proposed annual budget, studying monthly financial reports, and approving all claims lawfully incurred on behalf of the library. The library board must adopt a budget on or before September 20 of each year.
  • Attend Board meetings as often as possible. Absence from three consecutive board meetings may be cause for removal.
