East Chicago Public Library hosts Black History Month Events

The East Chicago Public Library has an exciting line-up of programs in celebration of Black History Month. The theme for this year’s program is: African Americans Struggle for Freedom. The programs will be held at the Main Library located at 2401 E. Columbus Drive. The events are free and open to the public. All are welcome.
Freedom Fighters: A Tribute to the Tuskegee Airmen will kick off the Black History Month celebration on Thursday, February 16 at 5 p.m. at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive. Come and meet three members of the Chicago DODO Chapter, Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. and view a corresponding exhibit.
On Thursday, February 23 at 5:00 p.m. we invite you to join the cast of East Chicago Public Library staff and community members as they portray the lives of important historical figures and focus on the life changing events of the African American Struggle for Freedom.
“This program represents the cooperative efforts of a committee of library staff members working hand-in-hand with community volunteers.” Interim Director Charles Moore said. “We hope area residents will take advantage of this unique opportunity for an evening of entertainment and culture.”
Program guests are also invited to tour the East Chicago Public Library’s latest exhibit in the Templeton Gallery, which is housed in the Main Library. The exhibit commemorates the struggles and triumphs of African-Americans in this country. It offers a chance to reflect on the history, and celebrate the contributions of individuals. In addition, a mini film festival is scheduled to run continually in the Templeton Gallery from 9 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. The gallery exhibit can be viewed through March 2 during regular library hours.

Celebrate Black History Month with a Movie

EAST CHICAGO (February 7, 2012) – The East Chicago Public Library invites you to join us for an exciting movie presentation celebrating Black History Month. . The movie will be shown at 5 p.m. on Thursday, February 16 at the Pastrick Branch, 1008 W. Chicago Avenue. There is no charge for admission plus free refreshments and popcorn will be served. Federal and state tax forms are now available at the East Chicago Public Library

EAST CHICAGO (January 30, 2012) - Federal and state tax forms are now available at the East Chicago Public Library. The most commonly used tax forms are available at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive, and the Pastrick Branch Library, 1008 W. Chicago Ave.
The East Chicago Public Library makes tax materials available as a public service to patrons. Staff members are not trained to answer questions on tax-related matters.
To find the answers to their questions, patrons can consult the books on tax-related matters that are available in the Reference Department. A limited number of IRS publications and instruction booklets also are available. Topics covered include earned income credit, credit for the elderly or disabled, charitable contributions, miscellaneous deductions, business expenses, tax rules for children and dependents, and home mortgage interest deductions. Forms are available during regular library hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

Financial Aid Night
EAST CHICAGO (January 30, 2012) – The Youth Services Department of the East Chicago Public Library will present a Financial Aid Night hosted by Purdue Educational Talent Search Program. The workshop will be held at 5 p.m. on Monday, February 13 at the Main Library, 2401 E. Columbus Drive. All East Chicago High School seniors and adults who are re-entering college are invited to attend the free workshop.
Please bring your 2011 completed tax forms, or if you do not have your taxes completed you may attend for assistance in completing the FASFA.
